# What Happens When Marketing Has No Leader?

I recently spoke with a former coworker. She was exhausted.

She had just finished a trade show where she was essentially the event team. Setup, show days, tear down. One person handling the booth, the details, the surprises, and the work that always seems to happen after everyone else has gone home.

Then she told me someone had already purchased next year's booth without talking to the team. The location isn't good. I know how much thought went into choosing this year's spot, because I was part of that decision. Where you stand on a show floor affects who sees you, who stops, and the conversations your sales team gets to have. That choice deserved more than a quick transaction.

She said the senior leader over marketing hadn't met with the team, and the managers weren't meeting together either. So everyone was doing their part, but no one was bringing the parts together.

And then she said, “I miss having you as my boss.”

That was lovely to hear. It also made me sad, because what she was describing wasn't a team that needed to work harder. They were already working hard. They needed leadership.

## Who is making the decisions?

When people hear “marketing director,” they often picture someone approving creative or presenting a strategy deck. Sure, that can be part of the job. But some of the most valuable work happens before a campaign ever launches.

Who is looking at the calendar six months ahead and asking whether the team has the people to pull it off? Who is talking to Sales before a booth contract is signed? Who is deciding what gets attention this quarter and what can wait? Who notices that one person is carrying an event that should have had three sets of hands?

A good marketing leader makes those calls with the business, and makes sure the team isn't left to absorb every gap in the plan.

Without that person, work doesn't stop. In fact, everybody may look busier than ever. Emails go out. The website gets updated. Events happen. Invoices get paid. But decisions get made in isolation, priorities shift depending on who asked last, and capable people are left guessing whether they're moving the business forward.

That is how things fall through the cracks. Not because the marketing managers don't care. Because no one is giving them a shared direction or making the decisions that sit above their roles.

## Leadership is a working relationship

I didn't have a magic trade show checklist. I met with my team. I asked what was coming, what was stuck, and where they needed me to step in. We talked through the goals, the budget, the booth, the people, and the follow-up. If something wasn't working, we made a decision together and changed it.

That's what my former coworker missed. Not someone hovering over every detail. Someone who knew what she was carrying, could see around the next corner, and would take responsibility for the bigger picture.

If you have marketing managers, an agency, or a very capable person doing a little of everything, you may already have plenty of execution. What you may be missing is a marketing director or leader who can connect the work to the business, set priorities, lead the people doing it, and stay close enough to catch the problems before they become everyone else's emergency.

That can be a full-time hire. For some businesses, it can be a fractional marketing leader who is genuinely in the work with the team. The title matters less than the ownership.

I keep thinking about that call. Especially the part where one person had to be there from setup to tear down. Marketing teams can do remarkable things. They shouldn't have to do them alone.
